ATOLS cover: Chimera

Vocal Design

Voice banks & V5 style presets utilized in this project:

  • Melody- Len V4 Power, Deep Shimmer

  • 1st Harmony- Len V4 Serious, Full Emotion

  • 2nd Harmony- Len V4 Cold, Full & Youthful

  • 3rd Harmony- Len V4 Serious, To the Stars

  • 4th Harmony- Len V4 Power, Again and Again

  • Incidental harmonies: Power [Strength & Texture], Cold [Stay Close], Serious and Power [Warm Emotion], Power [Up Close]

Still in the process of getting to know the strengths and weaknesses of Len’s voice bank. His range is a bit more limited than some other Vocaloids I have [I have to keep reminding myself to treat him like an alto], but that Power append is one of my hands-down favorites. I love its energy, clarity, and force.

I mostly used vocal fry and growl here, along with a bit of vibration.

The ending note of this song is probably my favorite ending note of any song ever. It’s so long that when it finally stops, it seems to ring with a sense of ultimate finality.

Reflections

Poor Len.  I never use him.  So I made a [probably misguided] resolution to do so this year.  I’ve been spending a lot of time listening to ATOLS recently, and although I like this song a lot, I always found it kind of odd that the producer didn’t make it with Miku.  Of course, a lot of the harmonies were pitched down for this version.

Len’s vocals have a kind of angstful purity to them which I find rather beguiling. I attempted to cover this with Kaito once, but his voice didn’t seem to have the necessary power. Maybe that’s why ATOLS chose IA for it instead of Miku. Who knows?
